Computers Location & Wireless Connections

There are computers in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics student room (G-34), the Industrial Hygiene lab (Rm 210) and the study room located in the Kettering Atrium. Additional machines are found in the Graduate Student Lounge, MSB G-Level, and Room 552.

The Atrium and Kehoe Auditorium are also equipped for wireless connection to the internet.

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) offers state-of-the-art computer facilities, networks and resources which include: more than 80 high-end computer workstations, Internet access, health literature databases (e.g. MEDLINE) accessible from the HSL, office or home; computer graphics, imaging and presentation software; over 200,000 books, journals, audiovisuals, software packages and electronic resources; and statewide access to resources from academic libraries and numerous databases via OhioLINK and Netwellness – Ohio’s consumer health electronic library created by Academic Information Technology & Libraries (AIT&L).

Services of the HSL include: systems support for computer applications, Internet, e-mail, and dial access, workshops on effective use of computer applications and Library resources, and ex-pert consultation with information specialists.

The Electronic Classroom in E-68 features 22 Pentium IV computers with Windows XP and full Internet access. The computers have zip and DVD drives. Courses and workshops are offered for Internet training, the Web, electronic mail and office tools (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook). Check their Calendar of Classes, mailed monthly to students. The calendar is also available on the Medical Center Library Web site (http://www.aitl.uc.edu). To reserve a place call 558 0186. The HSL is open 361 days a year. We close on New Years Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information about the Computer Lab, call Birsen Kaya (558-0345).

Computer Printing Procedures and Charges: The University of Cincinnati spends $600,000 each year to provide to students and others "free" printing in computer labs and libraries. On February 3, 2003, UC joined the majority of universities in instituting a system to manage printing, as it has for photocopying for many years. Black and white prints cost $.07 per page and color prints cost $.50 per page, less than Kinko's and most other printing facilities. At the Medical Center, computers in the following locations operate on the new system: Health Sciences Library, College of Medicine (COM) medical student lounge, COM graduate student lounge, COM E-level study rooms, COM Student Affairs computer lab, Clinical Skills computer lab.

College of Medicine Students: The College of Medicine generously subsidizes printing for its medical and graduate students. Each student printing account is given a $100 value (i.e., > 1400 B&W pages free) on July 1 of each year. COM students may purchase additional printing by activating UC ID badge as a Bearcat Campus Card and adding value to it using a personal credit card via the Bearcat Campus Card web site, or by visiting the East Campus Bookstore and adding value to card with cash, credit card, or check, or by using a Value Transfer Station on the West Campus, or calling the Bearcat Campus Card office at 556-2000.

UC Email
The University provides all students computer accounts free of charge. The Bearcat7 Online system is a client-server system that allows you to exchange electronic mail (e-mail) with other computer users on campus and around the World, and access the diverse resources of the Inter-net, including the World Wide Web. You may access your Bearcat7 Online account from your home, office or a campus computer lab. To request an account, go http://www.ucit.uc.edu/email/

Wireless Data Communications
Wireless LANS at UC: The current wireless LAN environment at UC is 802.11b and 802.11g compliant. Migration has begun to 802.11g wireless access points which will support 802.11b cards as well as the 802.11g cards. The 802.11b standard allows for data transmission between the workstation and wireless access points at 11MB. When signal strength diminishes due to distance between the workstation and access point, speeds of 5.5MB, 2MB and 1MB are also sup-ported. The 802.11g standard allows data transmission between the workstation and wireless ac-cess point at 54MB. When signal strength diminishes due to distance between the workstation and access point, speeds of 48MB, 36MB, 24MB, 18MB, 12MB, 11MB, 9MB, 6MB, 5.5MB, 2MB AND 1MB are also supported. Note that 802.11g access points will support 802.11b equipped workstations, but only at 802.11b speeds. The access point connects to the UC network via 10/100MB Ethernet.
