The
Occupational Medicine Residency Training
Program is based in the
Department of
Environmental Health in the
College of
Medicine. It is the oldest
continuously running U.S. occupational
medicine residency program, with over
200 graduates since its inception in
1947. The two-year residency satisfies
the training requirements of physicians
for certification in Occupational
Medicine by the American Board of
Preventive Medicine. The program
received continued accreditation for a
full five year term from the
Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) in April 2008.
The full two-year training program also
leads to a Master of Science degree,
which requires a thesis. Typically, the
program carries a complement of four to
five two-year residents, and will also
consider qualified residents for a
practicum one-year training program, or
for pathways co-sponsored by the
National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health (NIOSH) or Procter &
Gamble Co.
The residency has sufficient flexibility
to accommodate physicians with a variety
of interests and ultimate career
objectives, including:
1. the delivery of medical care in
an industrial setting,
hospital-based or free-standing
clinical practice, or consulting
setting
2. research, practice and teaching
in an academic unit or national
agency
3. health affairs administration at
a corporate, governmental or union
level
