Marietta-Parkersburg Metro Area and the University of Cincinnati: A Research Partnership

The University of Cincinnati has partnered with communities within the Marietta-Parkersburg Metropolitan area to explore the relationship between air quality and health.   Community partners include Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department, Neighbors for Clean Air, Washington State Community College and Marietta College.   A Community Advisory Board (CAB) has also been formed to help guide the research.  The CAB is composed of local residents, business owners, physicians, and government officials.

This website will be continually updated to provide the residents of the Marietta-Parkersburg Metropolitan area with study findings, air quality data collected by the research team and information to help understand the effect of air quality on health.  Please contact the study Director, Dr. Erin Haynes with questions or comments: Erin.Haynes@uc.edu, 513-558-5427.

Research Studies

Extent of Metal Exposure in Marietta, Ohio and the Surrounding Area

A pilot study of environmental exposure to manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) was conducted October 27-28 and November 15-16, 2006 at the Washington State Community College.  For more information on what the study involved and the results, click here

The Marietta Air Pollution Survey (MAPS)

The Marietta Air Pollution Research Survey (MAPS) was a survey research project conducted by Neighbors for Clean Air and Dr. Haynes at the University of Cincinnati.  The survey was distributed throughout the community by Neighbors for Clean Air and through media announcements through the local newspaper and radio.  The purpose of survey was to determine:
   1) the community’s level of knowledge and concern about local air quality;
   2) how the community perceives the effect of air quality on health; and
   3) where the community learns about air quality and which sources they trust the most.

The results of this survey will be used to help the UC–Marietta-Parkersburg research team understand what the community knows about their air quality, what research the community thinks is important, and how best to communicate research findings to the community.

The survey is now closed.  We collected responses from 171 Marietta-Parkersburg Metropolitan area residents!  Thank you for completing the survey!   Your response will help us determine future research areas.  If you have questions or comments, please contact the study Director, Dr. Erin Haynes, Erin.Haynes@uc.edu, 513-558-5427
