University of Cincinnati to host NIEHS Town Meeting

September 15, 2008

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

Childhood lead poisoning, second hand smoke, and mold in homes are some of the environmental health issues affecting families today.  The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has selected the University of Cincinnati’s Center for Environmental Genetics to co-host the "Your Home, Your Health, Your Voice" Town Hall Meeting on September 15, 2008.  This conference, to be held at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, will focus on not only providing the latest research of various issues affecting families and children, but will give the community a chance to voice their concerns about hazards in the home.

NIEHS Director and other key decision makers from that agency will be on hand to listen to concerns about how the things in the environment can keep you healthy or make you sick.  “This is a unique opportunity for the Greater Cincinnati community and others throughout the region because this will be the only NIEHS Town Hall Meeting of this kind in 2008, and program attendees have the opportunity to have direct input on the decision-making process for how NIEHS allocates its funding opportunities for the upcoming fiscal year”, states Elizabeth Kopras, CEG Junior Research Associate and Town Hall Meeting Program Coordinator.

This Town Hall Meeting goes a step further, by providing practical methods by which the community can get involved to become informed citizens, and be equipped with the tools to develop effective community partnerships.  Erin Haynes, DrPH, MPH, University of Cincinnati, and Caroline Beidler, a resident of Marietta, Ohio will present how they formed a partnership to address critical environmental health issues that were impacting many Marietta families and children.

The NIEHS Town Hall Meeting will be held September 15, 2008 from 9 am – 4 pm at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center located at 50 East Freedom Way in downtown Cincinnati.  The $15 registration fee includes a box lunch.  For more information and/or to register, please contact Elizabeth Kopras at (513) 558-3625 or at Koprasej@uc.edu.
